APPNA Expresses Discontent over Proclamation of Emergency in Pakistan

Westmont, IL, November 5, 2007 - The Association of Physicians of Pakistani-descent of North America (APPNA) expresses its utmost disappointment regarding the state of emergency proclamation in Pakistan. In the days prior, APPNA was equally displeased with the suspension of The Constitution, suppression of the judiciary and media, and massacre of human rights. "Once again, the rights of the people of Pakistan have been violated by the institution whose only responsibility is to safeguard its citizens," said Dr. Nadeem Kazi, the President of APPNA.

APPNA believes that any action taken by the government of Pakistan to maintain law and order, uphold internal and external security, or to combat terrorism, at the cost of an independent and strong judicial system, will lead the nation to further anarchy, and not towards peace and prosperity. APPNA, therefore, urges immediate reinstatement of The Constitution and return to a fully democratic course, in the country, that allows freedom of speech and fair and free elections.

Additionally, APPNA admires the position of the U.S. Administration of disapproving extra-constitutional measures, and hopes that Congress will support the return of civilian rule in Pakistan. For only a stable and democratic Pakistan will curb extremism and ensure peace in the region.
